Heavy Hearts: Scorpio & Capricorn Synastry Compatibility

Originally posted on Vocal

Introduction

This in the fourth article in my series on astrology compatibility between the signs, a series I started in honor of Valentines Day. You can read my other articles by clicking the underlined links. But before you read on, here are some things I'd like you to keep in mind:

1. While some aspects (trine, sextile) are generally more favorable or easier to deal with than others (square, inconjunct) I believe any two signs can be compatible with patience and understanding, which is why this article is less about "whether or not" Scorpio & Capricorn are compatible and more about how they interact.

2. This article is about all Scorpio & Capricorn placements including (but not limited to) Sun, Moon, Rising and Venus.

3. Of course, to accurately assess relationship compatibility, you need to look at the whole chart, and not just one placement. If interested, you can book an affordable synastry reading with me by clicking this link.

4. The principles addressed in this article apply to all types of relationships, both romantic and platonic.

Compatibility Between Scorpio & Capricorn Placements

Scorpio and Capricorn are sextile which means they are 60 degrees apart from one another on the zodiacal wheel. They share neither element nor modality but they do share a polarity. While Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign ruled by the planet Saturn, Scorpio is a fixed water sign ruled by Mars, but they are both "Feminine," or "Yin," signs, and thus considered compatible. While there is some difference between the two, these differences are generally considered to be supportive rather than conflicting. In this case, Water (Scorpio) helps the Earth (Capricorn) to grow. Think rain and how it helps to fertilize plants 🌱

I personally think that out of all the "sextile signs," Scorpio and Capricorn are two of the most similar. I say this because while Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, it is actually exalted by Mars, Scorpio's traditional ruler. I think the fact that Mars is so strong in both these signs says something more beyond what the sextile alone tells us. Mars is itself a planet associated with strength, war and the physical body. On the other side of that same coin, these are both traditionally considered difficult placements for the Moon; Scorpio being the sign of it's fall and Capricorn the sign of its detriment. These signs are often believed to indicate emotional struggles or challenges, and because of this, they may have a greater understanding for each other that even the other water & earth signs lack.

This isn't to say there aren't any differences between the two. As a water sign, Scorpio is guided primarily by their emotions, and as a fixed sign, these emotions are particularly intense. Furthermore, this sign is often stereotyped as being drawn to secrets, mystery, and even the occult. As an earth sign, Capricorn is not known for being particularly emotional but rather stoic, and more concerned with the mundane affairs of material reality. Ruled by Mars, Scorpio can be quite impulsive at times, rushing into things and even making assumptions based on gut feeling alone. Because Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, they tend to be more practical, considerate and slower to come to a decision in this regard. It is possible that Scorpio, as a sign that appreciates depth, may be frustrated with Capricorn's lack of vulnerability and its preoccupation with material ambitions. It's equally possible that the practical-minded, no-nonsense Capricorn may find Scorpio too dark, provocative or moody at times.

However, I think their similarities outweigh the differences. Essentially, both signs are associated with power and control, as well as strength, just in different ways. As the sign of the goat, Capricorn is associated with status, ambition and the strive for material wealth. It finds its strength through hard-work. Those born under this sign tend to be respectful of the rules & boundaries set out before them, following them diligently in the hopes that they may one day be in that same position of authority. Likewise, they appreciate order, leading some of them to be strict or controlling at times. Scorpio, on the other hand, is more about competition or power for its own sake. Remember that scorpions are predatory animals, and being born under this sign gives one a natural instinct for survival. Perhaps, it's for this reason that Scorpio has a much more rebellious reputation than Capricorn does. In reality, however, I find that depending on other placements, perhaps, Scorpio can be just as driven for worldly and mainstream success as Capricorn is. While Scorpio may not necessarily be driven by the same materialistic means, their competitive martial instinct and need to win often put them in the same positions in say, the business or political world. Let's just say I find that their shared interests lead them to cross paths very often, even if their motives are quite different.

Furthermore, even though Scorpio is emotionally driven, and prone to intense feeling responses, they tend to hide these emotions, aiming for the same self-control that Capricorn seeks. While actual scorpions are predatory animals, those born under the sign of Scorpio are less predatory than they are self-protective. Sensitive water signs that they are, they are often afraid of getting hurt, and so they use secrecy & a tough exterior as a coping mechanism. Capricorn's stoic nature stems from a similar place and often, with the Moon especially, those born under this sign are often forced to grow up too fast. Scorpio understands this and wants to help the Capricorn become more in touch with their feelings. They also, more than anything, want a place where they can let their guard down and be vulnerable. Ideally, they want to merge with their partner. Capricorn posses exactly the right kind of protective, reliable and paternalistic qualities that allow the Scorpio to feel safe enough to do this. Both signs are known to be very serious, very loyal, no-nonsense, black-or-white, and all-or-nothing types of characters. They are both trustworthy and able to keep the secrets shared with just each other. All in all, this is a classic match.
